A New Generation of Manhole Covers for Modern Traffic
Hinged manhole covers are now exposed to increasingly demanding conditions. Heavier traffic, large trucks, urban arterial roads and long-term loading place high demands not only on the cover’s strength, but above all on its stability, quiet operation and long service life. This is why the new generation of Europa 7 and Europa 9 hinged manhole covers was developed, bringing significant design innovations aimed at eliminating micro-movements between the cover and the frame.
The development of this new range was driven by a simple objective: to minimise movement of the cover within the frame. These micro-movements are responsible for most of the problems that emerge over time – from noise and wear of damping elements to the gradual deterioration of the manhole cover itself. We are talking about movements measured in tenths of a millimetre. Under normal operating conditions, they may remain unnoticed for a long time, but on heavily trafficked roads they become apparent very quickly.
A New Spring System and the Elimination of Micro-Movements
The new Europa 7 and Europa 9 manhole covers utilise a redesigned spring system that actively pulls the cover into the frame and helps maintain stable seating around the entire circumference. Both the spring design and the robotic spring manufacturing technology have been completely re-engineered to provide greater precision, improved alignment and long-term durability, even under intensive traffic loads.
The manufacturing process of the cast-iron components also plays a crucial role. As cast iron cools, it naturally shifts and is never perfectly flat. These minor imperfections can lead to the development of micro-movements between the frame and the cover. A damping insert placed between the cover and the frame can reduce noise only temporarily. As micro-movements gradually increase and excessive loads continue to act on the system, the insert quickly wears out or becomes damaged, causing the manhole cover to become noticeably noisy again when vehicles pass over it.
For this reason, the new generation of manhole covers offers significantly more precise machining of the bearing surfaces.

Europa 7: A Solution for Light to Heavy Loads
The Europa 7 range is designed for light to heavy A15-E600 loading conditions (you can read more about this classification in our related article). It uses a polyurethane damping insert positioned within the frame to help reduce both vibration and noise.
The covers in this range undergo robotic calibration, achieving flatness of the cover’s bearing surfaces within 0.2 millimetres. This tolerance corresponds to the polyurethane’s ability to absorb minor deformations and ensure full contact between the cover and the frame across the entire bearing surface.
Another important design feature is the use of three robotically calibrated springs that continuously pull the cover into the frame. This prevents impacts and destructive movement when vehicles pass over the cover. The result is quiet operation, enhanced stability and a significantly longer service life for the entire system.

Europa 9: A Manhole Cover for Extreme D400-E600 Loads
For the most demanding applications, the Europa 9 range was developed for extreme D400-E600 loading conditions – such as truck traffic routes, major roads and urban arterial roads. Compared with Europa 7, it introduces several key design differences:
- The most significant of these is its substantially larger bearing surface. The larger the area through which loads are transferred, the lower the pressure exerted on individual components of the manhole cover and the damping insert. This significantly reduces wear and extends the service life of the cover, even under extreme loading conditions.
- Europa 9 also incorporates a polyurethane insert mounted directly on the cover in an L-shaped profile. This design dampens not only vertical movement but also the horizontal forces generated by intensive heavy-vehicle traffic. This is one of the principal differences between the Europa 7 and Europa 9 ranges.
- Another key difference lies in the machining process. Europa 9 manhole covers undergo complete CNC machining of the frame’s bearing surface. The result is a manufacturing precision of up to 0.1 millimetres, enabling the cover to seat as stably as possible without unwanted movement.
In practice, this precision translates into long service life and quiet operation, even on heavily trafficked roads. The design also ensures that the cover sits flush with the road surface, minimising vibrations and rattling caused by passing vehicles.

Open or Closed Hinge?
The new range also introduces innovations in hinge design. Customers can now choose between an open hinge and a closed hinge. A closed hinge provides protection against theft because the cover cannot simply be removed from the frame. An open hinge, on the other hand, significantly simplifies servicing and replacement of the cover.
On heavily trafficked roads, the speed of intervention is often critical. If the cover needs to be replaced, for example due to damage, the open hinge allows for rapid replacement without complicated dismantling procedures or major traffic restrictions. This is why the open hinge is now particularly recommended for the Europa 9 range.
Proper Installation Is Essential
Great attention must also be paid to the installation process itself. Even the highest-quality product can lose its performance characteristics if installed incorrectly. One particularly problematic situation is temporary operation, where manhole covers remain installed in unfinished road surfaces for months during construction. Under such conditions, excessive loading occurs, creating a risk of damage even before the construction works have been completed.
The correct approach is therefore clear: the manhole cover should only be permanently installed into the finished road surface at the final stage of construction. Only then can its proper function, stability and long service life be ensured.
